GENERAL APPEARANCE : Quite low to the ground dog, well built for the job. General appearance on the whole, a true Picardy Spaniel.

HEAD

 

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Oval, relatively wide without prominent parietal bones, occipital crest slightly visible.

Stop : Moderately accentuated but marked.

 

FACIAL REGION :

Nose : Broad, well open nostrils.

Muzzle : Long and quite broad.

Lips : Wide and pendulous forming a distinctly square muzzle.

Eyes : Calm expression; eyes dark, large, well open.

Leathers : Must be set slightly above the eye level, quite thick, framing the head; beautiful wavy silky hair; the leather stretched in its length must reach the tip of the muzzle.

NECK : Well set. A slight dewlap is permitted.

BODY :

Back and loin : Not too long, well sustained.

Croup : Rather a little falling away.

Chest : Of medium depth.

Ribs : Harmoniously sprung and descending to elbow level.

TAIL : Not extending too much beyond the hock and definitely without a hook.

LIMBS

 

FOREQUARTERS :

Shoulder and upper arm : Slightly oblique.

Forearm : Strong and well muscled.

Forefoot : Round, a little broad but not flat, well furnished with hair in between tightly closed toes.

 

HINDQUARTERS :

Upper thighs : Well muscled.

Lower thighs : Long and furnished with profuse fringes.

Hocks : Bent without exaggeration and furnished with fringes from the hock to the foot.

Hind foot : Round, a little broad but not flat, well furnished with hair in between tightly closed toes.

 

COAT

 

HAIR : Flat; or slightly wavy: legs and tail well furnished with fringes.

 

COLOUR : Grey black speckled forming a bluish shade, with black patches.

 

SIZE   :

 

Height at the withers : 57 to 60 cm for the males, a little less for the females.

 

FAULTS : Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree.

 

·      Skull : Too narrow-lacking chiselling.

·      Muzzle : Pointed.

·      Eye : Light and too small.

·      Leather : Short, set too high and too thin.

·      Foot : Flat, splayed or too broad.

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY : Already mentioned by Xenophon, used as « oysel dog » widespread in the whole of Europe under different names. The breed was renewed and improved by inbreeding, selection and training without any addition of foreign blood by E.K. Korthals during the second half of the 19th century. Since, the different national clubs have remained faithful to its precepts.

GENERAL APPEARANCE : Vigorous dog, rustic of medium size. Longer than tall. The skull is not too broad. The muzzle is long and square. The eyes, dark yellow or brown are surmounted but not covered by bushy eyebrows and well developed moustaches and beard give him a characteristic expression and express firmness and assurance.

BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT : Gentle and proud, excellent hunter, very attached to his master and his territory which he guards with vigilance. Very gentle with children. 

HEAD : Big and long, with harsh hair, thick but not too long; moustache, beard and eyebrows well developed.

 

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Not too broad. The upper lines of the skull and the muzzle are parallel.

Stop : Not too pronounced.

 

FACIAL REGION :

Nose : Always brown.

Muzzle : Long and square, of the same length as the skull, bridge of the nose slightly convex.

Eyes : Dark yellow or brown, large, rounded surmounted but not covered by the eyebrows, very intelligent expression.

Ears : Of medium size, not curled inwards, flat, set on level line with the eyes, the short hair which covers them is more or less mixed with longer hairs.

NECK : Moderately long, without dewlap.

BODY : Its length is markedly greater than the height at the withers (from 1/20th to 1/10th).

Back : Strong.

Loin : Well developed.

Chest :  Deep, not too wide, ribs slightly sprung.

TAIL : Carried horizontally or with the tip slightly raised, covered with thick hair but without fringing, generally should be docked by a third or a quarter. If it were not shortened, it would be carried horizontally with its tip slightly raised.

LIMBS

 

FOREQUARTERS : Straight, vigorous, with thick hair.  In action, the forelegs are perfectly parallel.

Shoulders : Well set on, rather long, very oblique.

 

HINDQUARTERS : Covered with thick hair.

Thighs : Long and well muscled.

Hocks : Well angulated.

 

FEET : Round, strong, toes tight and arched.

GAIT / MOVEMENT  : The hunting gait is the gallop, punctuated by periods of trot. The trot is extended. Catlike movement when walking up game.

COAT

 

HAIR : Harsh and coarse, reminding of the touch of a wild boar’s bristles. Never curly or woolly. Under the harsh top coat is a fine dense undercoat.

 

COLOUR : Preferably steel grey shade with brown (liver) patches or self-coloured brown (liver) coat. Frequently liver-roan or a close mixture of brown (liver) and white hairs. Equally permissible white and brown and white and orange coats.

SIZE  : About 55 to 60 cm for males and 50 to 55 cm for females.

GENERAL APPEARANCE : A strong, broadbacked dog, well boned with strong limbs; gentle expression; head carriage gay and striking. Very well constructed forequarters.

HEAD

 

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Wide and rounded, prominent occiput; parietals flat.

Stop : Sloping to the muzzle, not at right angle.

 

FACIAL REGION :

Nose : Brown, medium sized, nicely rounded.

Muzzle : Long, sufficiently wide, tapering from the set on at the skull to the nose; very slightly arched in the middle part.

Lips : Of medium thickness, slightly let down, not hanging.

Eyes : Dark amber in colour, well opened; expression frank and friendly.

Ears : Set on rather low, framing the skull with beautiful wavy, silky hair.

NECK : Well let into the shoulders, muscular.

BODY : Haunch bones slightly lower than the withers.

Loin : Straight, not too long, wide and full.

Croup : Very slightly sloping, rounded.

Chest : Deep, sufficiently wide, reaching well down to elbow level.

Flanks : Flat, yet deep, though with a slight tuck-up.

TAIL : Set-on not too high. Hanging down in two slight curves, convex and concave. Not too long, furnished with lovely silky feathering.

LIMBS

 

FOREQUARTERS : Forelegs straight, well muscled, feathered.

Shoulders : Shoulder-blade rather long, somewhat upright, sufficiently muscled.

Upper arm : Well muscled.

Elbow : Well set.

 

HINDQUARTERS : Hindlegs well feathered down to the hock.

Haunches : Prominent, reaching to the level of the back and loins.

Upper thighs : Straight, long, broad, well muscled.

Hocks : Slightly bent.

Rear pastern : Straight.

 

FEET : Round, large, tight, with a little feathering between the toes.

SKIN : Rather fine and supple.

COAT

 

HAIR : Dense and not too silky; fine on head, slightly wavy on the body.

 

COLOUR : Grey mottling with brown patches on different pads of the body and root of tail. Most often marked with tan on head and limbs.

 

SIZE   :

 

Height at the withers : 55 to 60 cm.

A tolerance up to 62 cm is accepted for males.

GENERAL APPEARANCE : Well balanced, heavily boned, active with a thoughtful expression, overall appearance denoting strength.

BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT : Stoical, great-hearted, highly intelligent with a determined attitude enhancing his natural ability. A silent worker with an excellent nose. Steady, reliable, kind and dignified; more aloof than other Spaniels, showing no tendency towards aggression.

HEAD : Square, massive, medium length.  No exaggeration in head and skull.

 

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Broad on top with decided occiput; heavy brows.

Stop : Deep.

 

FACIAL REGION :

Muzzle : Heavy, square.

Flews : Well developed.

Jaws/Teeth : Jaws strong, with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely over-lapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws.

Eyes : Clean, dark amber, slightly sunk, some haw showing but without excess. Full light eyes highly undesirable. Free from entropion.

Ears : Large, vine leaf-shaped, well covered with straight hair. Hanging slightly forward, feather not to extend below leather.

NECK : Fairly long, thick, powerful.

BODY : Long, heavy, near to ground.

Back : Straight, broad, long.

Loin : Muscular.

Chest : Deep; well sprung ribs.

Underline : Well let down in flank.

 

TAIL :  Customarily docked.

Docked : Set low. Well feathered, carried level with back.

Undocked : Set low. Well feathered, carried level with back. Strong at root, tapering gradually to the tip. Of  moderate length.

 

LIMBS

 

FOREQUARTERS : Legs short, straight, well boned, strong.

Shoulders : Strong, sloping, muscular.

 

HINDQUARTERS : Very powerful and well developed.

Stifles : Well bent and set straight.

GENERAL APPEARANCE : Strong, upstanding dog with a degree of elegance. Distinctive coat.

BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT : Intelligent, steady, reliable. Bold, friendly, self confident and independent. May seem aloof.

HEAD : Wedge-shaped in both side and front profiles. In proportion to body size.

 

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Foreface and skull equal length. Planes of skull and muzzle parallel.

Stop : Slight.

 

FACIAL REGION :

Nose : Black in blacks and brown in livers.

Jaws/Teeth : Jaws strong, with perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws.

Eyes : Large, not prominent, oval-shaped, obliquely set. Dark brown in blacks; in livers brown tone to blend with coat colour.

Ears : Rather small, set slightly above level of eye; lying close to head, covered with small curls.

NECK : Strong and slightly arched, of medium length, free from throatiness and flowing freely into well laid back shoulders.

BODY :

 

Topline : Strong and level. Slightly longer from withers to root of tail than from withers to ground.

Loins : Short, deep and powerful.

Chest : Deep with well sprung ribs, oval in cross section with brisket reaching elbow. Forechest visible. Ribs extend well back.

Flank : Slight tuck up.

TAIL : Flows from topline. Should reach approximately to hock, carried straight on a level with topline when moving.

LIMBS

 

FOREQUARTERS : Forelegs straight, set well under body.

Shoulders : Well laid back and muscular.

Upper arm : Upper arm and shoulder blade approximately equal in length.

Pasterns : Strong.

 

HINDQUARTERS : Strong, muscular.

Stifles : Moderate turn of stifles.

Hock : Well let down and well bent.

 

FEET : Round, tight with well-arched toes.

GAIT / MOVEMENT : Effortless, powerful gait with good extension and drive. Parallel movement. At speed, legs tend to converge.

HAIR : Body coat a thick mass of small tight, crisp curls lying close to skin, extending from occiput to tip of tail; without undercoat or bare patches. Elsewhere hair smooth.

 

COLOUR : Black or liver.
