UTILIZATION: Great Gascon Saintongeois: Dog used for shooting and sometimes hunting big game but also hare; generally with the pack or alone as a sleuth.

                           Small Gascon Saintongeois: Versatile dog used for shooting. Its origins make it a hare specialist but also a good hunter of big game.

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY:

Great G.S.: In the middle of the 19th century the Count Joseph de Carayon-Latour, wanting to regenerate the declining breed of the Hound of Saintonge, crossed the last descendants with the Bleu de Gascogne of Baron Ruble, thus creating the Gascon Saintongeois but causing the extinction of the Hound of Saintonge.

Small G.S.: In the middle of the 20th century some hunters from the South West of France selected the smallest subjects from their litters of Great Gascon Saintongeois and thus created this variety, intended originally for hare hunting.

 

GENERAL APPEARANCE:

Great G.S.: Very well constructed dog, giving at the same time an impression of strength and elegance. Very French in type with regard to the head, coat and expression.

Small G.S.: Medium sized dog, well proportioned and distinguished.

 

IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS:

Height at the withers/scapular-ischial length, ratio 10/10.5.

Length of muzzle equal to that of the skull.

 

BEHAVIOUR/TEMPERAMENT:

Pack hound par excellence, fine-nosed, wide-casting and endowed with a very sonorous voice. Joins the pack instinctively. Calm, affectionate and amenable to orders.

 

HEAD: The lines of the skull and the muzzle are divergent.

 

CRANIAL REGION:

Skull: Seen from the front, domed and rather narrow; the occipital protuberance is well defined. Seen from above, the back of the skull is of a pronounced ogival shape.

Stop: Only slightly pronounced.

 

FACIAL REGION:

Nose: Black, well developed; nostrils well opened.

Lips: Covering the lower jaw; corners discreet. The edges of the lips are black.

Muzzle: Strong; slightly convex.

Jaws: Scissor bite. Incisors are set well square to the jaws.

Cheeks: Lean.

Eyes: Oval shape; brown. Edges of eyelids are black. Gentle and trusting expression.

Ears: Fine and curled, they should reach at least the tip of the nose. Set on below the level of the eye and placed rather backwards, freeing the skull.

 

NECK: Of medium length and thickness. Slightly arched with little dewlap.

 

BODY:

Back: Very taut, without excess in length.

Loin: Well attached, slightly arched, quite muscular and not too long.

Croup: Of good length, slightly sloping.

Chest: Broad and long, reaching the elbow. Forechest rather broad.

Ribs: Slightly rounded and long.

Flank: Slightly tucked up.

 

TAIL: Strong set on; tapering well to the tip, reaching the point of the hock. Carried elegantly like a sabre.

 

LIMBS

 

FOREQUARTERS:

Overall view: Powerful forehand.

Shoulder: Quite long, muscled; moderately oblique.

Elbow: Close to the body.

Forearm: Strong bone.

Feet: Slightly elongated oval; toes lean and tight-fitting. Pads and nails black.

 

HINDQUARTERS:

Overall view: Well proportioned.

Upper thigh: Long and well muscled.

Hock: Broad, well angulated and well let down in line with the body.

 

GAIT/MOVEMENT: Regular and effortless.

 

SKIN: Supple and not too thick. White with black patches.

 

COAT

 

HAIR: Short and tight.

 

COLOUR: The ground colour is white with black patches and sometimes speckled but not excessively. Two black patches are generally placed at either side of the head, covering the ears, surrounding the eyes and stopping at the cheeks. The cheeks are tan, preferably pale.

Two tan markings placed above the superciliary arches give the eyes a “quatroeillé” (four-eyed) appearance. Traces of tan are also found on the inner side of the ears and in speckles along the legs. Some fawn hairs may appear on the upper part of the ear but without giving the head a tricolour appearance. Sometimes at the base of the upper thigh there is a typical dead-leaf marking called “roe buck mark”.

 

SIZE

Height at withers: Grand G.S.: Males:     65 to 72 cm.

                                               Females: 62 to 68 cm.

                           Small G.S.:   Males:    56 to 62 cm.

                                               Females: 54 to 59 cm.

With tolerance of +/- 1 cm.

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY : He is of a very old breed; contemporary of the St.Hubert-Hounds he composed, in the 14th century, the packs of Gaston FEBUS, Comte (count) de Foix who used him to hunt the wolf, the bear or the boar.

Very widespread in the South (midi) and South-West of France, particularly in Gascony, from where he takes his name; he is at the origin of all the scenthounds named « from the South » (du midi).

GENERAL APPEARANCE : Ancient breed of dog, of outstanding French type when it comes to the head, the coat and the expression. Imposing, giving an impression of calm strength and of great nobleness.

BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT : Very fine nose; endowed with a sonorous howling voice, with deep tones. Very intent in his way of hunting. Instinctively a pack hound. Temperament calm; obeys orders easily.

HEAD

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Seen from the front, slightly domed and not too broad; the occipital protuberance is marked. Seen from above, the back of the skull is ogival in shape. The forehead is full.

Stop : Slightly accentuated.

 

FACIAL REGION :

Nose : Black, well developed; nostrils well opened.

Muzzle : Of equal length to that of the skull; strong; nasal bridge slightly arched.

Lips : Quite drooping, covering well the lower jaw, giving the front part of the muzzle a square profile. The corner of the lips is well marked without being loose.

Jaws/Teeth : Scissor bite. Incisors set well square to the jaws.

Cheeks : Lean; the skin shows one or two folds.

Eyes : Oval shape; appear slightly sunken beneath thick eyelids; brown. The lower lid sometimes shows a certain looseness. Expression gentle and a little sad.

Leathers : Characteristic of the « blue dog » : they are fine, curled in, ending in a point and must reach beyond the extremity of the nose. The leather is narrow at its base which is situated well below the eyeline.

NECK : Moderately long; slightly arched; dewlap developed.

BODY :

Back : Rather long but well supported (firm).

Loin : Well fused.

Croup : Slightly sloping, emphasizing the haunches.

Chest : Long, broad; let down to elbow level. Forechest broad. Ribs moderately rounded and long.

Flank : Flat and well let down.

TAIL : Rather thick, sometimes there may be some longer and coarser, slightly offstanding hairs (like ears of grain) towards the tip; reaching the point of the hock; strong at its root; carried sabre fashion.

Forearm : Strong bone structure; tendons prominent.

FEET : Of a slight elongated oval; toes lean and tight. Pads and nails black.

GAIT / MOVEMENT : Regular and easy.

SKIN : Quite thick, supple. Black or strongly mottled with black patches, never entirely white. Mucous membranes (hairless zones) black.

COAT

HAIR : Short, quite thick; very dense.

COLOUR : Entirely mottled (black and white) giving a slate blue colouring effect; either marked or not with more or less extended black patches. Two black patches are generally placed at either side of the head, covering the leathers, surrounding the eyes and stopping at the cheeks. They do not meet up on the top of the skull; they leave a white interval in the middle of which there is often a small black oval spot, typical of the breed. 

Two more or less bright tan markings are placed above the superciliary arches giving a « quatreoeillé » appearance to the eyes. There are also traces of tan on the cheeks, lips, inner face of the leathers, on the legs and under the tail.

SIZE  :

Height at the withers : Males   : 65 to 72 cm.

CLASSIFICATION F.C.I. : Group 6  Scent hounds and related breeds.

Der Levesque war ein "typisch französischer" Hund. Schlank, gut gebaut und von sehr kräftigem Knochenbau, galt er als schneller, robuster Parforcehund mit einem vorzüglichen Geruchssinn. Vom Wesen her wird der Levesque als lebhaft, temperamentvoll, aber auch anhänglich beschrieben. Er war ein Meutehund mit ausgeprägter Jagdleidenschaft und galt schon in den 80er Jahren als sehr selten. Die Rasse entstand wohl um 1870 in Frankreich und zwar durch Kreuzungen mehrerer Laufhundrassen, z.B. des Bleu de Gascogne, des Gascogne-Saintongeoise und auch des Foxhounds. Er wurde durch sein Ursprungsland Frankreich offiziell als "suprimé", als ausgestorben, bezeichnet. Der hübsche Hund hatte große, hängende Lefzen; dunkle, tiefliegende, sanfte, hell kastanienfarbene, hoch angesetzte Augen mit intelligentem und ruhigem Ausdruck. In seinem Wesen war der Levesque ein überschäumender, anhänglicher und leidenschaftlicher Jagdhund.

Widerristhöhe: Zwischen 65 und 72 cm für beide Geschlechter.

Gewicht: 25 bis 30 kg für beide Geschlechter.

Farbe: Das kurze Fell war ausnahmslos weiß und schwarz, entweder großer schwarzer Mantel oder schwarze Flecken von verschiedener Größe (das Schwarz manchmal blau reflektierend).

GENERAL APPEARANCE : A very distinguished hound presenting, to a high degree of perfection, strength, elegance and lightness, with a range of the most fascinating colours.

HEAD : Long but not exaggerated, not very wide, the bones prominent with a slight occipital protuberance.

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Rather flat, sloping very gently to the foreface.

 

FACIAL REGION :

Nose :  Strong, wide and prominent.

Muzzle : Slightly convex, long without exaggeration.

Lips : Upper lip covering the lower, muzzle tapering.

Eyes : Large, round, surrounded with black. Lovely expression.

Leathers : Of medium width, fine leather, set on a little low, medium length and slightly turned inwards.

NECK : Long, slim, without dewlap.

BODY :

Back : Well muscled and very well coupled.

Loin : Muscular.

Flank : Slight tuck-up but sufficiently spacious for the intestines.

Brisket : Very deep, proportionately more so than wide.

Ribs : Long.

TAIL : Medium length, fine, smooth, never with longer and coarser slightly offstanding hairs (like ears of grain) towards the tip; elegantly carried in a slight curve.

FOREQUARTERS : Straight, very muscular, lean and strong, flat and broad.

Forefeet : the “wolf-foot”, rather long, very resistant.

Hip : Somewhat sloping, well developed and of good length.

Thighs : Very muscular.

Hockjoint : Low to the ground, slightly bent. Hocks vertical.

GAIT / MOVEMENT  : Free mover; gallops easily, bounding lightly and passing well through undergrowth.

SKIN : Black nose. Testicles varying from white to black.

COLOUR : Tricolour with black saddle, or tricolour with large black patches; sometimes white and orange (bicolour); wolf-coloured hair is quite frequent.

HEAD : Fairly fine, lean, of medium length.  

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Forehead  slightly domed, not very broad; occipital protuberance perceptible.

Stop : Well defined.

 

FACIAL REGION :

Nose : Well developed, black or red-brown.

Muzzle : Rather square. Nasal bridge fairly broad; first straight, then slightly arched, moderately long.

Lips : Slightly or not at all in form of flews, the upper lip covering the lower without overhanging fleshiness; corner of the lips often visible.

Eyes : Alert, very open and dark, eyerims black or brown.

Leathers : Of medium size, set on relatively high for a French hound, rather flat, in the lower section turning slightly inwards.

NECK : Of medium length, rather round, somewhat strong; a slight dewlap is permitted.
