ORIGIN : Great Britain.

UTILIZATION : Pointing dog.

CLASSIFICATION F.C.I. : Group 7      Pointing Dogs.

                                              Section 2.2 British and Irish Pointers and Setters; Setters.

                                              With working trial.

GENERAL APPEARANCE : Stylish dog, with galloping lines. Consistent with its build which can be compared to a weight-carrying hunter. Symmetrical in conformation throughout.

BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT : Intelligent, able and dignified. Bold, outgoing, of a kindly even disposition.

HEAD : Deep rather than broad. Length from occiput to stop longer than from stop to nose. Below and above eyes lean.

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Slightly rounded, broadest between ears. Broader than muzzle, showing brain room.

Stop : Clearly defined.

 

FACIAL REGION :

Nose : Large, broad, nostrils open and black.

Muzzle : Long with almost parallel lines, neither pointed nor snipey. Muzzle note quite as deep as its length.

Flews : Not pendulous, clearly defined lips.

Jaws/Teeth : Jaws strong with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping the lower teeth and set square to the jaws.

Cheeks : As narrow as leanness of head allows.

Eyes : Dark brown, bright. Neither deep nor prominent, set sufficiently under brows, showing keen, intelligent expression.

Ears : Medium size, thin. Set low, lying close to head.

NECK : Long, lean, arched, without throatiness.

BODY : Moderate length.

Loin : Wide, slightly arched.

Chest : Not too broad. Brisket deep, ribs well sprung. Back ribs deep.

TAIL : Straight or slightly scimitar, not reaching below hocks. Carried horizontally or below line of back. Thick at root, tapering to fine point. Feather or flag starting near root, long, straight, growing shorter to point.

LIMBS

FOREQUARTERS : Forelegs flat boned, straight, strong.

Shoulders : Shoulder blades long, sloping well back, wide flat bone, close at withers, not loaded.

Elbow : Well let down and close to body.

Pastern : Upright.

 

HINDQUARTERS : From hip to hock, the hindlegs are long, broad and muscular. From hock to heel short and strong. Straight from hock joint to ground. Pelvis tending to horizontal.

Stifles: Well bent.

 

FEET : Oval, close-knit, well arched toes, plenty of hair betweeen. Well paded toes, deep heel cushions.

GAIT / MOVEMENT : Steady, free-moving and true, with plenty of drive behind.

COAT

HAIR : On head, front of legs, tips of ears short and fine; moderate length, flat and free from curl or wave on all other parts of body. Feather on upper portion of ears long and silky; on backs of legs long, fine, flat and straight, fringes on belly may extend to chest and throat. As free as possible from curl or wave.

COLOUR : Deep, shining coal black, without rustiness, with markings of chestnut red, i.e. lustrous tan. Black pencilling on toes and black streak under jaw permissible.  Tan markings : Two clear spots over eyes not over 2 cms (3/4 ins.) in diameter. On sides of muzzle, tan not reaching above base of nose, resembling a stripe around clearly defined end of muzzle from one side to other. Also on throat, two large, clear spots on chest. On inside hindlegs and inside thighs, showing down front of stifle and broadening out to outside of hindlegs from hock to toes. On forelegs, up to elbows behind, and to pastern joints or little above, in front. Around vent. Very small white spot on chest permissible. No other colour permissible.

SIZE AND WEIGHT :

Height at the withers : Dogs   : 66 cm (26 ins.).

                                 Bitches: 62 cm (24,5 ins.).

Weight : Dogs   : 29,5 kg (65 lbs).

             Bitches: 25,5 kg (56 lbs).

FAULTS : Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog.

Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities shall be disqualified.

UTILIZATION : Terrier.

CLASSIFICATION F.C.I. : Group 3    Terriers.

                                              Section 1  Large and medium-sized Terriers.

                                              Working trial optional.

GENERAL APPEARANCE : Largest of the Terriers, a muscular, active, fairly cobby dog, without suspicion of legginess or undue length of body.

BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT : Keen of expression, quick of movement, on the tiptoe of expectation at any movement. Character denoted and shown by expression of eyes, and by carriage of ears and erect tail. Outgoing and confident, friendly, courageous and intelligent. Alert at all times, not aggressive but fearless.

HEAD : Well balanced, with no apparent difference in length between skull and foreface. Free from wrinkles.

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Long and flat, not too broad between ears and narrowing slightly to eyes.

Stop : Hardly visible.

 

FACIAL REGION :

Nose : Black.

Muzzle : Foreface well filled up before eyes, not dish-faced or falling away quickly below eyes, but a delicate chiselling prevents appearance of wedginess or plainness. 

Lips : Tight.

Jaws/Teeth : Upper and lower jaws deep, powerful, strong and muscular, as strength of foreface is greatly desired. No excess development in the jaws to give a rounded or bulging appearance to the cheeks, as « cheekiness » is undesired. Teeth strong. Scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping the lower teeth and set square to the jaws preferable, but vice-like bite acceptable. An overshot or undershot mouth undesirable.

Cheeks : Level and free from fullness.

Eyes : Dark in colour, small, not prominent, full of terrier expression, keenness and intelligence. Light or bold eye highly undesirable.

Ears : « V »-shaped with a side carriage, small but not out of  proportion  to size of dog. Top line of folded ear slightly above level of skull. Pendulous ears or ears set too high undesirable.

NECK : Clean, muscular, of moderate length and thickness, gradually widening towards shoulders, and free from throatiness.

BODY :

Back : Short, strong, straight and level, showing no slackness. 

Loins : Muscular. In short-coupled and well ribbed-up dogs there is little space between ribs and hips. When dog is long in couplings some slackness will be shown here. 

Chest : Deep (i.e. approximately level with the elbows) but not broad. Ribs well sprung.

 

TAIL : Customarily docked. 

Docked : Set on high and carried gaily, not curled over back. Good strength and substance. Tip approximately at same height as top of skull.

Undocked : Set on high and carried gaily. Not curled over back. Good strength and substance.

LIMBS

FOREQUARTERS : Forelegs perfectly straight, with good bone.

Shoulders : Long, well laid back, sloping obliquely. Shoulder-blades flat. 

Elbows  : Perpendicular to body, working free of sides.

 

HINDQUARTERS :

Thighs : long and powerful.

Stifles : Well bent, turned neither in nor out.

Second thigh : Muscular.

Hock : Well let down, parallel with each other when viewed from behind.

 

FEET : Small, round and compact, with a good depth of pad, well cushioned, and toes moderately arched, turning neither in nor out.

GAIT / MOVEMENT : Legs carried straight forward. Forelegs move freely, parallel to the sides. When approaching forelegs should form a continuation of the straight line of the front, feet being same distance apart as elbows. Propulsive power is furnished by hindlegs.

COAT

HAIR : Hard, dense and wiry, not so long as to appear ragged. Lying straight and close, covering body and legs; outer coat hard, wiry and stiff, undercoat shorter and softer. Hardest coats are crinkling or just slightly waved; curly or soft coat highly undesirable. 

COLOUR : Body saddle black or grizzle as is top of the neck and top surface of tail. All other parts tan. Ears often a darker tan, and shading may occur round neck and side of skull.  A few white hairs between forelegs acceptable.

SIZE : Height about 58-61 cm (23-24 ins) for dogs, taken from top of shoulder, and bitches about 56-59 cm (22-23 ins).

ORIGIN : Australia.

UTILIZATION : Terrier.

 

CLASSIFICATION FCI : Group  3   Terriers.

                                           Section 2  Small-sized Terriers.

                                           Without working trial.

GENERAL APPEARANCE : A sturdy low-set dog, rather long in proportion to height with strong Terrier character, alertness, activity and soundness. Its untrimmed, harsh coat with definite ruff around the neck extending to the breastbone and its long strong head assist in developing its hard bitten, rugged appearance. 

BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT : Essentially a working terrier, but its loyalty and even disposition make it equally suitable as a companion dog.

HEAD

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Long, flat, of moderate width, full between the eyes. Covered with a soft topknot.

Stop : Slight but definite.

 

FACIAL REGION :

Nose : Black, of moderate size, the leather extending to the bridge of muzzle.

Muzzle : Strong and powerful, equal in length to that of the skull; the muzzle must be strong and not fall away under the eyes. The length and strength of the muzzle are essential to give the strong, punishing jaw.

Lips : Black, tight and clean.

Jaws/Teeth : Jaws strong and punishing, teeth large and evenly spaced, the upper incisors fitting closely over the lower (scissor bite).

Eyes : The eyes shall be small, oval, with keen expression, and of dark brown colour, set well apart and not prominent.

Ears : The ears are small, erect, pointed, well carried, set on moderately wide, free from long hair and sensitive in their use (puppies under six months excepted).

NECK : The neck is of good length, slightly arched, strong and flowing into the well angulated (well-laid) shoulders.

BODY : Long in  proportion to height, strongly  constructed. In considering the  body, attention must be paid  to the opening description,  "a sturdy low set dog, rather long in proportion to height".

Back : Level topline.

Loins : Strong.

Chest : Of moderate depth and width, with well sprung ribs. Forechest well developed, brisket relatively deep.

TAIL : Docked, set on high, and well carried, but not over the back.

LIMBS

FOREQUARTERS : Well boned, straight and parallel when viewed from the front. The legs aree slightly feathered towards the wrist.

Pasterns : Strong, without slope.

 

HINDQUARTERS : Moderate length of quarters, broad. Viewed from behind they should be parallel from hock to feet, neither too wide nor too close.

Thighs : Strong and muscular.

Stifles : Well turned.

Hocks : Well bent and let down.

 

FEET : Small, round, compact, well  padded, toes closely knit and moderately arched. Turned neither in or out, with strong black or dark toenails.

GAIT / MOVEMENT : The action to be free, true, springy and forceful. When viewed from the front, the forelegs should move truly without looseness of shoulder, elbows or pasterns. The hindquarters to have drive and power, with free movement of stifles and hocks. Viewed from the rear the legs from the hocks to the ground to be parallel, neither too close nor too wide.

COAT  

HAIR : The body coat consists of a harsh straight dense top coat approximately 6 centimeters (approx. 2  1/2") long with short soft textured undercoat. The muzzle, lower legs and feet to be free from long hair.

 

COLOUR :

a) Blue, steel blue or dark grey blue, with rich tan (not sandy) on face, ears, under body, lower legs and feet and around vent (puppies excepted). The richer the colour and more clearly defined the better. Smuttiness is objectionable. Topknot blue, silver or a lighter shade than head colour.

b) Clear sandy or red, any smuttiness or dark shadings objectionable. A topknot of a lighter shade is acceptable.

c) In any colour, white markings on chest or feet must be penalised.

SIZE AND WEIGHT :

Height  : The desirable height is approximately 25 centimeters (approx. 10 ins.) at the withers, with bitches slightly less.

Weight  : The desirable weight is approximately 6,5 kilograms (approx. 14 lbs.) for dogs, with bitches slightly less.

FAULTS : Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree.

CLASSIFICATION F.C.I. : Group   3  Terriers.

                                              Section 1  Large and medium-sized Terriers.

                                              Without working trial.

GENERAL APPEARANCE : A graceful, lithe, muscular dog, with no signs of either weakness or coarseness. Whole head pear or wedge-shaped, and expression in repose mild and gentle.

BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT : Spirited and game, full of confidence. An intelligent companion with strong sporting instincts. Good-tempered, having an affectionate nature, dignified, not shy or nervous. Mild in repose but full of courage when roused.

HEAD : Covered with profuse silky top-knot which should be nearly white.

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Narrow, but deep and rounded.

Stop : There must be no stop: the line from occiput to nose-end straight and unbroken.

 

FACIAL REGION :

Nose : Nostrils large and well defined. Blues and blue and tans must have black noses, liver and sandies must have brown noses.

Muzzle : Well filled up beneath eyes.

Lips : Close fitting, without flew.

Jaw/Teeth : jaw long and tapering. Teeth large and strong. Scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping the lower teeth and set square to the jaws.

Eyes : Small, bright and deep set. Ideal eye has appearance of being triangular. Blues have a dark eye; blue and tans have lighter eye with amber lights, livers and sandies a light hazel eye.

Ears : Moderately sized, filbert-shaped, set on low, and hanging flat to cheek. Thin and velvety in texture; covered with short fine hair with fringe of whitish silky hair at tip.

NECK : Long and tapering, deep base with no tendency to throatiness. Springs well up from shoulders, and head carried rather high.

BODY : Muscular and markedly flexible. Body slightly greater in length than height.

Back : has natural arch over loin.

Loin : Arched loin with curved topline immediately above loins.

Chest : Deep and fairly broad. Flat ribbed, deep through brisket which reaches to elbow.

Underline : Arched loin creating a definite tuck-up of underline.

TAIL : Moderate length, thick at root, tapering to a point and gracefully curved. Set on low, never carried over back.

LIMBS

FOREQUARTERS : Forelegs straight, wider apart at chest than at feet.

Shoulders : Flat and sloping.

Pasterns : Long and slightly sloping without weakness.

 

HINDQUARTERS : Muscular and moderate length. Hindlegs have appearance of being longer than forelegs.

Hocks : Strong and well let down, turning neither in nor out.

 

FEET : Long hare feet with thick and well closed-up pads.

GAIT / MOVEMENT : Capable of galloping at high speed and have appearance of being able to do so. Action very distinctive, rather mincing, light and springy in slower paces and slight roll when in full stride.

COAT

HAIR : Very distinctive. Thick and linty, standing well out from skin, but not wiry. A distinct tendency to twist, particularly on head and face.

COLOUR : Blue, liver, or sandy with or without tan. Darker pigment to be encouraged.

SIZE AND WEIGHT :

Height  : about 41 cm (16 inches) at withers. This allows for slight variation below in the case of a bitch and above in the case of a dog. 

Weight : between 8,2 - 10,4 kg (18 and 23 lbs).

GENERAL APPEARANCE : Essentially a working terrier. Capable of following a horse.

BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT : Combining activity with gameness.

HEAD : Head like that of an otter.

CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Moderately broad.

 

FACIAL REGION :

Nose : Black nose preferable, but liver or flesh-coloured one not a serious fault.

Muzzle : Short, strong.

Jaws/Teeth : Scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws. Level bite acceptable. Undershot or overshot a major fault and highly undesirable.

Eyes : dark with keen expression.

Ears : Small, V-shaped, of moderate thickness, and dropping forward close to the cheek.

NECK : of moderate length.

BODY : deep, narrow, fairly long.

Loins : Strong.

Chest : Ribs carried well back, but not oversprung, as a terrier should be capable of being spanned by both hands behind the shoulder.

TAIL : Moderately short; fairly thick at base, then tapering. Set high, carried gaily, but not curled over back.

LIMBS

FOREQUARTERS : Forelegs straight, not too heavy in bone.

HINDQUARTERS : Racy.

 

FEET : Small with thick pads.

GAIT / MOVEMENT : Has the soundness to follow a horse.

SKIN : Must be thick.

COAT

HAIR : Harsh and dense; with close undercoat.

COLOUR : Red, wheaten, grizzle and tan, or blue and tan.

WEIGHT : Dogs 5,9-7,1 kg (13-15,5 lbs); bitches 5,1-6,4 (11,5 lbs-14 lbs).

FAULTS : Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect on the terrier’s ability to work and on the health and welfare of the dog.
